Evolution in Context

While debate over the theory of evolution had been occurring throughout the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin’s interpretation of evolution was received with such success because it came at the time in which it played directly to what industrializing Britain wanted to hear. Darwin’s theory both shaped and was shaped by the individualist climate of Industrial Revolution Britain.

  1. I think this is a great intro/thesis because it gives an argument that somehow defies what most people would think. The whole "in context" thing is brilliant.

My one question would be why you begin with the "while...century" clause; does the fact that Darwin's theory was convenient to society contradict/overturn the ongoing debate you speak of? It seems as if you want your reader to reconsider whether evolution is merely a convenient-to-go-along-with theory... which is actually supported by the debate rather than contradicted by it.
